Things We Don’t Understand in School: A Conversation with Ruth Noack

Events 11 Aug 16 0

Saturday, 13th August 2016, 3 pm
at KUNCI Cultural Studies Center
Ngadinegaran MJ3/100, Mantrijeron
Yogyakarta

(Geser untuk teks dalam Bahasa Indonesia)
KUNCI invites you to discuss with Ruth Noack about the critical notion of study through resisting the fixed forms of school. Can we imagine different ways of organizing education outside of the dominant model? How to reimagine what we already know about school?

Noack is interested in learning about informal and formalised local practices of teaching art and hopes that people will contribute to the discussion with their ideas. In turn, she would like to talk to you about her vision of making a Museum in a School. This vision has developed out of her experience with both teaching and curating since the 1990s, with its drawbacks and its pleasures. But at the basis of her practice is the conviction that art has the capacity to make a kind of sense that we need in our lives. This is an attempt to rethink the relationship of the spheres of education and art with each other.

This event will be broadcasted online via Radio KUNCI, http://radio.kunci.or.id/

Ruth Noack trained as a visual artist and art historian, she has worked as author, art critic, university lecturer and exhibition maker since the 1990s. Noack was curator of documenta 12 (2007). Head of the Curating Contemporary Art Program, Royal College of Art, London (2012-13), she acted as Research Leader for the EU-project MeLa – European Museums in an age of migrations. Noack was Šaloun professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague (2013-14) and lead the Gwangju Biennale International Curator Course in 2014. Since 2015, she is responsible for one of the DAI Roaming Academy trajectories.

Hal-hal yang Tidak Kita Pahami di Sekolah: Percakapan dengan Ruth Noack

Sabtu, 13 Agustus 2016, 15.00 WIB
di KUNCI Cultural Studies Center
Ngadinegaran MJ3/100, Mantrijeron
Yogyakarta

Selain pernah bekerja sebagai kepala program Curating Contemporary Art di Royal College of Art, London (2012-2013), ia juga bertindak sebagai kepala peneliti proyek Uni Eropa, MeLa– European Museums in an age of migrations.

Transactions within Threshold

Events 24 May 16 0

A Conversation with Elaine W. Ho and Fotini Lazaridou-Hatzigoga

In order to exist, transaction needs a firm ground, fixed currency and transparent supply-demand relations, amongst other thing. Therefore, a market is often perceived as the ideal setting for transactions. It has a clear distinction between goods, or between service provider and consumer. Money is the currency which facilitate exchange of goods or services. Yet what can happen when transaction takes place not in a market and involves another mode of currency? How, if transaction takes place in a space where personal and communal interests are colliding? In this conversation session for Radio KUNCI, Syafiatudina (KUNCI Cultural Studies Center, Yogyakarta) will discuss with Elaine W. Ho and Fotini Lazaridou-Hatzigoga (HomeShop, Beijing) on various forms of transaction which take place in an art space where artistic practices and the striving for creative autonomy intersect with the practices of community caring, especially within neighborhood-based interactions.

HomeShop (2008-2013, Beijing) was a self-initiated project space located in a storefront space in the old city centre hutong alleyways of Beijing. Using the space and its window front as a permeable frame to examine ways of relaying between public and private, HomeShop engaged in various interwoven series of small-scale activities, including interventions, workshops, discussion groups, hosted services for the public and an on-going research of the ‘city-in-village’ dynamics of contemporary Beijing. These forms of creative articulation and documentary gestures were invested as processes by which HomeShop served as an open platform to question existing models of economic and artistic production. Here, daily life, work and the community served as explorations of micropolitical possibility, and of working together. www.homeshop.org.cn
